Derek Palacio (born 1982) is an American novelist whose fiction explores Cuban American families, migration, and ties to homeland. He received an MFA in Creative Writing from Ohio State University, and his short story “Sugarcane” was included in "The O. Henry Prize Stories 2013." In 2024, he received a Creative Writing Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. His novel "The Mortifications," set against the backdrop of the 1980 Mariel boatlift, follows a mother and her twin children who leave Cuba for the United States while the father remains behind, tracing how exile, separation, and the pull of Cuba shape the family’s lives across the years.
