Derek B. Miller is an American novelist and international security researcher whose fiction spans crime, science fiction and historical adventure. A Boston native, he studied at Sarah Lawrence College and Georgetown University and earned a doctorate in international relations at the Graduate Institute in Geneva. He worked on peace and security with the United Nations and research institutions, including as a researcher at the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research. His research examined how media exert pressure on foreign policy through political discourse and social psychology. “Norwegian by Night,” published in Japanese as “Byakuya no Jii Sniper,” follows elderly Jewish widower Sheldon Horowitz, who moves from New York to his granddaughter’s home in Oslo. After a killing, he flees with a young boy he is determined to protect. The story connects life in an unfamiliar society with memories of war and family. It won the Crime Writers’ Association John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger in 2013. “The Girl in Green,” translated as “Sabaku no Sora kara Reito Chicken,” follows an American soldier and a British journalist haunted by their failure to save a girl in Iraq. Reunited roughly twenty years later, they embark on another rescue amid the contradictions of warfare and humanitarian assistance. The novel was shortlisted for the Gold Dagger in 2017. “The Curse of Pietro Houdini” (2024) shifts to wartime Italy. Fourteen-year-old Massimo, orphaned in the bombing of Rome, joins a mysterious man calling himself an art expert in an attempt to remove paintings from the abbey of Montecassino. Their adventure combined a child’s coming of age with the morally complicated choices of surviving the Second World War.
