デニス・ルヘイン（1965年生まれ）は、ボストンを舞台とする犯罪小説と映像作品の脚本を手がけてきたアメリカの小説家、脚本家。ボストンで育ち、私立探偵パトリック・ケンジーとアンジェラ・ジェナーロを主人公にしたデビュー作でシェイマス賞を受賞した。探偵シリーズから独立した『ミスティック・リバー』（原題 “Mystic River”）では、幼いころの事件によって人生を変えられた三人の友人が、一人の娘の殺害を機に、遺族、捜査する刑事、疑いを向けられる人物として再び交わった。犯罪の謎とともに、過去の傷、家族への忠誠、地域社会の結びつきが復讐と誤認へ転じる過程を描き、クリント・イーストウッド監督によって映画化された。歴史小説にも活動を広げた『夜に生きる』（原題 “Live by Night”）は、禁酒法時代のボストンで警察幹部の息子ジョー・コグリンが裏社会へ入り、タンパやキューバへと活動の場を広げる物語である。密造酒、組織犯罪、裏切りと権力争いを通じて当時の社会を描き、2013年エドガー賞長編賞を受賞した。2023年の『Small Mercies』（未邦訳）では、1974年のサウスボストンに舞台を戻した。公立学校の人種隔離撤廃と通学バスをめぐる対立が激化するなか、娘の失踪を追う母親が、黒人青年の死と地域の犯罪組織に関わる秘密へ近づく姿を描き、人種差別、家族への愛情、共同体の権力を扱った。小説の執筆と並行して、HBOのテレビドラマ「THE WIRE」の脚本陣に参加した。Apple TV+では2022年の「ブラック・バード」、2025年の「スモーク」で脚本と製作を担当した。
Dennis Lehane (born 1965) is an American novelist and screenwriter who grew up in Boston. His debut novel, featuring private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro, won the Shamus Award and began a continuing detective series. Moving beyond that series, “Mystic River” reunited three childhood friends whose lives had been changed by an abduction and assault. After one man’s daughter is murdered, they meet again as a grieving father, an investigating detective and a possible suspect. Alongside the crime, the novel traced the consequences of childhood trauma, family loyalty, communal ties and vengeance. Clint Eastwood adapted it for film. Lehane extended his fiction into the past with “Live by Night,” following Joe Coughlin, a Boston police captain’s son who enters the Prohibition-era underworld and moves through Tampa and Cuba. Its bootlegging operations, betrayals and struggles for power situated the criminal story within a changing society. The novel won the 2013 Edgar Award for Best Novel. “Small Mercies” (2023) returned to South Boston in 1974, during the conflict over school desegregation and busing. A mother searching for her missing daughter encounters connections with the death of a young Black man and the neighbourhood’s criminal organization. The novel examined racism, family love and the power exercised within a tightly bound community. Alongside his fiction, Lehane joined the writing staff of HBO’s The Wire. He wrote and produced the Apple TV+ limited series Black Bird in 2022 and Smoke in 2025.
