David Riesman (1909–2002) was an American sociologist and Professor at Harvard University whose work explored the relationship between individuals and modern society, mass culture, and consumerism. His analysis of postwar American values and changing patterns of social character influenced sociology, management studies, and cultural criticism. His best-known work, "The Lonely Crowd: A Study of the Changing American Character," introduced the concepts of tradition-directed, inner-directed, and other-directed personalities and is regarded as a classic study of modern social character.
