(The Tangled Tree: A Radical New History of Life)は、生物の進化を一本の樹のような枝分かれとして捉える従来の見方が、分子生物学の発展によってどのように覆されたかを描いた科学ノンフィクションである。
David Quammen (born 1948) is an American science writer and journalist whose work explores evolution, ecology, extinction, and diseases that pass from animals to humans. He has contributed to "National Geographic," "The New Yorker," and "The Atlantic," among other publications, and has received three National Magazine Awards. In "The Tangled Tree: A Radical New History of Life," Quammen explains how discoveries in molecular biology overturned the familiar image of evolution as a tree composed of steadily dividing branches. Following scientists such as Carl Woese, who helped establish archaea as a major domain of life, he examines horizontal gene transfer—the movement of genetic material across species and lineages—and shows how the histories of bacteria, viruses, and humans have been shaped by exchange and fusion as well as descent. The book was longlisted for the 2018 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
