David G. McComb, born in 1934, is an American historian of cities, sport and regional culture. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Southern Methodist University, an MBA at Stanford University, an MA at Rice University and a PhD at the University of Texas in 1968. At Colorado State University he taught United States history, world history, sports history and the history of technology, retiring as professor emeritus in 2002. His early research focused on the development of Texas cities, including Houston and Galveston. Galveston: A History examines the interaction between an island environment and technological change, tracing the port, medical institutions, entertainment industries and responses to hurricanes. Prosperity and disaster form parts of the same urban story, shaped by attempts to alter the environment and by the limits it imposes. Sports in World History, also available in Japanese translation, traces the emergence and international spread of modern competition through sporting organizations, the YMCA and the Olympic movement. Its treatment extends beyond Western sports and places commercialization and performance-enhancing drugs within the wider cultural history of competition. Spare Time in Texas approaches regional history through recreation, moving from drinking and gambling to parks, zoos, libraries, theatres and stadiums. By asking what people choose to do for pleasure, McComb uses leisure as evidence of social interests and values. Across these studies, the development of urban institutions and technologies intersects with the everyday practices through which people form communities and express their priorities.
