David Epstein is a science journalist and author whose reporting examines sport, learning, and the development of expertise. He studied environmental science and astronomy at Columbia University and earned master’s degrees in environmental science and journalism. An 800-metre runner at Columbia, he also worked on ecological research in the Arctic and aboard a seismic research vessel. Moving from research into journalism, he became a senior writer at Sports Illustrated and later a science and investigative reporter at ProPublica. In “The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance” (2013; Japanese translation, 2014), interviews with athletes and researchers supported an investigation of how inherited traits, training, and environment interact. The book examined athletic achievement beyond a simple opposition between talent and effort. “Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World” (2019; Japanese translation, 2020) extended his inquiry from sport to music, science, and professional life. It compared settings in which early specialization is effective with those in which varied experience, experimentation, and the transfer of knowledge across fields matter. His Range Widely newsletter also explored science and human performance. In “Inside the Box: How Constraints Make Us Better” (2026), he turned to limits on time, resources, and available choices. Drawing on research and examples across different fields, he examined the conditions under which constraints can encourage focus, creativity, and collaboration.
