Damon Galgut (born 1963) is a South African novelist and playwright. Since publishing his first novel at the age of seventeen, he has written fiction that explores post-apartheid South Africa, as well as themes of isolation, loss, and moral responsibility. After being shortlisted for the Booker Prize with "The Good Doctor" and "In a Strange Room," he won the 2021 Booker Prize for "The Promise." His best-known novel, "The Promise," follows a family over several decades as an unfulfilled promise exposes the enduring injustices and generational divisions of post-apartheid South Africa.
