Yoru Sumino is a Japanese novelist. Sumino began writing fiction in high school and made a publishing debut in 2015 with I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, developed from a work initially posted online. The novel placed second in the 2016 Japan Booksellers’ Award and was subsequently adapted into live-action and animated films. Sumino’s fiction often follows young people confronting loneliness, emotional distance, and relationships that change the way they see themselves and others. In the representative novel I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, an introverted high school student learns that a classmate has a terminal pancreatic illness and gradually discovers the meaning of human connection through the time they spend together.
