Shunsuke Sugita is a Japanese literary and cultural critic whose work also addresses precarious employment, poverty, and the difficulties men face in contemporary society. Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1975, he completed a master’s program in the Graduate School of Humanities at Hosei University. His experience includes working in casual employment and providing personal assistance to people with disabilities. He has contributed criticism of literature, animation, and manga to literary and intellectual magazines. His first book, “Furita ni totte ‘Jiyu’ to wa Nani ka” (2005), draws on his employment experiences to examine what freedom means for workers facing insecure jobs and economic exclusion. Tracing Hayao Miyazaki’s life and career through The Wind Rises, “Miyazaki Hayao Ron: Kamigami to Kodomotachi no Monogatari” (2014) considers how changing portrayals of children illuminate the filmmaker’s treatment of family, nature, and work. Examining men’s loneliness through relationships, sexuality, employment, aging, and family life, “Himote no Hinkaku: Otoko ni totte ‘Yowasa’ to wa Nani ka” (2016) asks how men can acknowledge vulnerability and build worthwhile lives without making romantic acceptance or social success the measure of their value.
