Atsuko Suga (1929–1998) was a Japanese essayist, scholar of Italian literature, and translator. After graduating from the University of the Sacred Heart in Tokyo, she studied in Paris and Rome and later settled in Milan, where she helped translate Japanese literature into Italian and introduce Italian writers to Japanese readers. Following the death of her Italian husband, Giuseppe Ricca, she returned to Japan, taught Italian literature, and began publishing essays based on her European years in her mid-fifties. Her first book, “Milano Kiri no Fukei,” received both the Kodansha Essay Award and the Women’s Literature Prize. The collection recalls her husband, the circle surrounding the Corsia dei Servi bookstore, and the streets of postwar Milan, viewing a life of friendship, displacement, and loss through the distance of later years in Japan.
