Svante Pääbo (1955–) is a Swedish geneticist who pioneered paleogenetics and paleogenomics, fields that reconstruct the genetic information of extinct humans from ancient remains. As Director of the Department of Evolutionary Genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, he led the sequencing of the Neanderthal genome, helped identify the previously unknown Denisovans, and demonstrated that both groups interbred with modern humans. He received the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution. In “Neanderthal Man: In Search of Lost Genomes,” Pääbo recounts the scientific and personal journey behind the Neanderthal genome project, including the persistent problems of degraded samples and contamination that had to be overcome before ancient DNA could reveal this shared history.
