Susanna Moore is an American novelist and nonfiction writer. Born in Pennsylvania and raised in Hawaii, she teaches creative writing at Princeton University. Her novel "In the Cut," an exploration of female desire and violence, was adapted into a film directed by Jane Campion. In "Paradise of the Pacific: Approaching Hawaii," Moore reconstructs the islands’ history in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries through the accounts of voyagers and missionaries alongside Native Hawaiian traditions. The book follows Captain Cook’s arrival, Kamehameha I’s unification of the islands, the collapse of the kapu system, and the coming of Christian missionaries, showing how contact with the outside world rapidly transformed Hawaiian society. It was longlisted for the 2015 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
