Susan Straight (1960–) is an American novelist whose work is rooted in Riverside, California. Her fiction portrays the multiracial communities of Southern California and examines family history, race, class, immigration, and the memories passed from one generation to the next. In “I Been in Sorrow’s Kitchen and Licked Out All the Pots” and “Take One Candle Light a Room,” she traces the lives of families whose histories cross racial and generational boundaries. “Highwire Moon,” a 2001 National Book Award finalist for Fiction, follows a boy searching for his missing mother and the women who help him on his journey. Straight’s novels attend closely to the voices of local communities, showing how American divisions are lived through family, place, and inherited memory.
