Susan Southard is an American nonfiction writer and theatre director. After living in Japan as a high-school exchange student, she founded Essential Theatre, where she developed performance projects with communities often marginalized by society. Her twelve years of interviews and archival research resulted in “Nagasaki: Life After Nuclear War,” which received the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for Nonfiction. Centered on five people who were teenagers when the atomic bomb struck Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, the book follows them far beyond the moment of the explosion as they confront injury, radiation illness, discrimination, and occupation-era censorship, documenting the effects of nuclear war across the course of individual lives.
