Sue Prideaux is an Anglo-Norwegian biographer and art historian whose subjects have included painter Edvard Munch, playwright August Strindberg, philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, and artist Paul Gauguin—figures whose radical work was matched by complicated personal lives. Her biography of Munch won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, while her life of Strindberg received the Duff Cooper Prize. In “I Am Dynamite!: A Life of Friedrich Nietzsche,” winner of the Hawthornden Prize, Prideaux follows Nietzsche through chronic illness, restless travel, and his relationships with Richard Wagner and Lou Salomé, then examines how his sister Elisabeth reshaped his reputation after his collapse, separating the historical man and his writings from the ideological figure later created in his name.
