Sue Black (1961–) is a Scottish forensic anthropologist and anatomist whose research and casework use anatomical features in human remains to establish identity and reconstruct details of a person’s life. As lead forensic anthropologist for the British Forensic Team, she investigated war crimes in Kosovo and helped identify victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami. After serving as a professor at the University of Dundee and Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Lancaster University, she became President of St John’s College, Oxford, and entered the House of Lords in 2021 as Baroness Black of Strome. In “All That Remains: A Life in Death,” Black draws on experiences in anatomy laboratories, criminal investigations, conflict zones, and disaster sites to explain how forensic anthropologists recover identities from damaged remains and return names to the dead and answers to their families.
