Steve Coll is a journalist investigating intelligence, corporations and American foreign policy. He worked as a reporter and editor at The Washington Post, sharing the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism, and later spent nearly two decades as a New Yorker staff writer. He also led Columbia Journalism School and the policy institute New America. Ghost Wars examined relations among the CIA, Pakistan's intelligence service and Afghan factions from the Soviet invasion to the eve of September 11, 2001, winning a Pulitzer Prize. Directorate S followed the subsequent secret wars involving the United States, Afghanistan and Pakistan and won the National Book Critics Circle Award. The Achilles Trap investigated Saddam Hussein's relationship with the United States, tracing intelligence assessments and mutual miscalculations preceding the invasion of Iraq.
