Scott Spencer (1945–) is an American novelist born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Chicago. His fiction explores how love, desire, and obsession unsettle personal judgment and family relationships, using detailed psychological portraits. “Endless Love,” about a teenage boy’s consuming passion and its destructive consequences, became a bestseller and was adapted into two films. “A Ship Made of Paper,” which examines prejudice, class, and domestic tensions through an interracial love affair, was a finalist for the 2003 National Book Award for Fiction. Spencer probes the ways people justify their desires, questioning the boundaries between affection, self-deception, and responsibility.
