Scott C. Johnson (born 1973) is an American journalist and filmmaker. For twelve years, he worked as a Newsweek foreign correspondent and bureau chief, reporting from Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, and more than fifty countries. His memoir “The Wolf and the Watchman: A Father, a Son, and the CIA,” about growing up with a father who worked for the CIA, was longlisted for the 2013 National Book Award for Nonfiction. In “The Con Queen of Hollywood: The Hunt for an Evil Genius,” Johnson investigates an international fraud in which a con artist impersonated prominent entertainment executives, lured actors and production workers to Indonesia with nonexistent jobs, and extracted money through fabricated expenses. Drawing on victims’ accounts, calls, emails, and other evidence, he reconstructs the elaborate deception and identifies the vulnerabilities within Hollywood’s freelance labor system that made it possible.
