Scott Anderson is an American journalist and novelist who has reported from conflict zones including Lebanon, Israel, Northern Ireland, Chechnya, Bosnia, Sudan, and El Salvador. His work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Magazine, and other publications. In his historical nonfiction, he reconstructs wars and revolutions through the experiences of diplomats, intelligence agents, activists, and civilians as well as political leaders. In “Lawrence in Arabia: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly and the Making of the Modern Middle East,” Anderson follows T. E. Lawrence and three other operatives through the Middle East during World War I, showing how espionage, secret agreements, and the Arab Revolt helped create borders and conflicts that continued long after the war ended.
