Junichi Suzuki (1952–) is a Japanese film director, producer, and screenwriter. After graduating from the University of Tokyo, he joined the Nikkatsu studio as an assistant director and made his directorial debut in 1981. He directed the commercially successful film “Maririn ni Aitai,” based on the true story of a dog that swam between Okinawan islands, and later produced a documentary trilogy examining the internment and military service of Japanese Americans. In “Sekai de Nihon Eiga o Uru Hoho,” he draws on his experience producing and distributing films internationally to identify the obstacles facing Japanese cinema and propose ways for it to reach wider global audiences.
