Setsuko Shinoda (born 1955) is a Japanese novelist. After graduating from Tokyo Gakugei University, she worked for the municipal government of Hachioji before making her literary debut by winning the Shosetsu Subaru New Writers’ Award for "Kinu no Hen’yō" in 1990. Drawing on subjects such as science, medicine, religion, environmental problems, and international development, she often combines social observation with elements of suspense and horror to examine how institutions and organizations shape individual lives. Her best-known work, "Onnatachi no Jihādo," received the Naoki Prize in 1997. The novel follows five women employed by a mid-sized insurance company: one seeks an advantageous marriage, another is forced to leave despite her abilities, while others pursue a home of their own or financial independence through language skills. Confronted by a male-dominated workplace and restrictive expectations surrounding marriage, each must find a different way to build a life on her own terms.
