Shirley Hazzard (1931–2016) was an Australian-born American novelist, short story writer, and essayist. Born in Sydney, she lived in Hong Kong and elsewhere before moving to the United States. After working at the United Nations, she divided much of her life between New York and Italy. Her precise prose and psychological insight explore love, loss, the loneliness of life abroad, and the ways history shapes individual destinies. “The Transit of Venus,” which follows the lives of two Australian sisters, won the 1980 National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction. Set in Japan, Hong Kong, and other locations after the Second World War, “The Great Fire” portrays love and renewal among people scarred by war. It won the 2003 National Book Award for Fiction and the 2004 Miles Franklin Award.
