Shelby Steele is a scholar and essayist on American race relations and society after the civil-rights movement. He worked at the Hoover Institution and wrote about race, public policy and culture. The Content of Our Character examined Black and white relationships, individual responsibility and collective identity, winning the 1990 National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction. White Guilt considered how guilt about racial injustice became connected with political and institutional legitimacy. Shame investigated the effects of interpretations of America's past wrongs on political polarization. Across these works, Steele examined the treatment of civil-rights ideals in later policy and culture through the relationship between individuals and groups.
