Sheena Iyengar (born 1969) is a Canadian-born social psychologist and behavioral scientist who studies choice, decision-making, culture, and innovation. She is the S. T. Lee Professor of Business, Chair of the Management Division, and Academic Director of the Innovation Hub at Columbia Business School. Her research includes the influential experiments on “choice overload,” which demonstrated that an abundance of options can discourage people from making decisions rather than increasing their freedom or satisfaction. Her representative book, “The Art of Choosing,” draws on psychological experiments, cross-cultural research, and cases from fields such as medicine to examine why people value choice, how culture shapes their preferences, and why better decisions sometimes require limiting options or allowing others to choose.
