Shannon Vallor is a philosopher specializing in the philosophy of technology and AI ethics. She is the Baillie Gifford Professor in the Ethics of Data and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Edinburgh and Co-Director of its Centre for Technomoral Futures. Her research examines how emerging technologies shape human character, social institutions, and the capacities needed to live well, and she served as a visiting AI ethicist at Google from 2018 to 2020. In “The AI Mirror: How to Reclaim Our Humanity in an Age of Machine Thinking,” Vallor describes AI not as an autonomous intelligence surpassing humanity but as a mirror reflecting the biases and values embedded in past data, and considers how it might be redirected from reproducing existing society toward supporting human moral and intellectual growth.
