Seymour Hersh (born 1937) is an American investigative journalist whose reporting has focused on concealed actions by governments, armed forces, and intelligence agencies. After working for the Associated Press, he reported for publications including “The New York Times” and “The New Yorker.” In 1969, Hersh exposed the My Lai massacre and its cover-up by the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, earning the 1970 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting. He later investigated the secret bombing of Cambodia, illegal domestic surveillance by the CIA, and the abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib. His representative book, “Chain of Command: The Road from 9/11 to Abu Ghraib,” examines how intelligence was selected and distorted after the September 11 attacks and traces the decisions within the U.S. government and military that connected the war on terror to prisoner abuse.
