Takako Shirakawa is a translator from English and Spanish into Japanese. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from International Christian University and teaches translation practice and theory as a part-time lecturer in Dokkyo University’s Department of Tourism and Transnational Studies. Her translations range from history and politics to Spanish-language literature and crime fiction. Investigating the realities of Japanese prisoner-of-war camps, Sarah Kovner’s “Prisoners of the Empire: Inside Japanese POW Camps” appeared in Shirakawa’s translation as “Teikoku no Ryoshu.” Drawing on records and testimony from different locations, the book examines prisoners’ experiences, the institutional and administrative failures behind harsh treatment, and questions of accountability after the war. Examining the history of dictatorship and threats to contemporary democracy, Madeleine Albright’s “Fascism: A Warning” was translated into Japanese by Shirakawa and Yoshihiko Takatori. It combines Albright’s experiences of exile and diplomacy with an analysis of how leaders exploit fear and anger to consolidate power. Following a detective investigating the murder of a wealthy couple in rural Catalonia, Javier Cercas’s “Terra Alta,” published in English as “Even the Darkest Night,” appeared in Shirakawa’s Japanese translation as “Terra Alta no Zoo.” The investigation becomes intertwined with the detective’s troubled past, exploring revenge, justice, and the possibility of beginning life again.
