Michio Shiobara is a Japanese translator of nonfiction on science, history, and society. His work includes books by Stephen Hawking, Daniel Lieberman, and Steven Pinker. In Sarah Ogilvie’s history of the volunteers behind the Oxford English Dictionary, he translated an account connecting the collection of knowledge with diverse individual lives. Erica Thompson’s “Escape from Model Land” examines the assumptions and social perspectives involved when scientific models guide real decisions. In Leidy Klotz’s “Subtract,” Shiobara translated an investigation of the tendency to favor adding things when solving problems, and of the possibilities that emerge when people consider removing them.
