Joyce Carol Oates (1938–) is an American novelist, short story writer, poet, critic, and professor. Since the 1960s, she has published an extensive body of fiction, poetry, essays, and criticism, often examining violence, poverty, race, gender, and the breakdown of family life through intense psychological detail. Her novel “them,” a portrait of a working-class family in Detroit, won the 1970 National Book Award for Fiction. “Blonde,” her fictionalized account of Marilyn Monroe, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and explores the loneliness and exploitation concealed behind celebrity. “Black Water,” which compresses a political tragedy into the final hours of a young woman’s life, was also a Pulitzer finalist. Moving freely among literary realism, historical fiction, horror, and psychological suspense, Oates continues to show how social violence enters and reshapes individual lives.
