Joshua Ferris (1974–) is an American novelist and short-story writer. Born in Illinois, he graduated from the University of Iowa, worked at an advertising agency in Chicago, and later studied creative writing at the University of California, Irvine. His debut novel, “Then We Came to the End,” uses a first-person plural narrator to portray advertising employees facing layoffs after the collapse of the dot-com boom; it won the PEN/Hemingway Award and was a finalist for the National Book Award. “To Rise Again at a Decent Hour,” about a lonely dentist confronting a crisis of identity, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and won the Dylan Thomas Prize. Ferris uses humor to examine work, illness, family, faith, social isolation, and self-deception in contemporary American life.
