Joseph Osmundson is an American microbiologist and science writer. Osmundson teaches biology at New York University and draws on molecular biology and virology to write and organize around HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, queer bodies, and inequalities in health. In “Spawning Season: An Experiment in Queer Parenthood,” Osmundson intertwines an attempt to build a family with a lesbian couple of longtime friends with the life cycle of salmon returning home to spawn. The memoir examines biological kinship, chosen family, race, the climate crisis, and the longing and grief involved in becoming—or not becoming—a parent. The book was longlisted for the 2026 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
