Joseph S. Joseph S. Nye Jr. (1937–2025) was an American political scientist and international relations scholar. He was Professor Emeritus at Harvard University. Best known for introducing the concept of soft power, Nye transformed the study of international relations by emphasizing the importance of attraction, values, and institutions alongside military and economic strength. He also made major contributions to the theories of smart power and complex interdependence, helping to reshape the understanding of global politics in an increasingly interconnected world.
