Jordan Thomas（ジョーダン・トーマス） アメリカの文化人類学者、ノンフィクション作家。ケンブリッジ大学およびダラム大学で学び、マーシャル奨学生として人類学を研究。カリフォルニア大学サンタバーバラ校で研究・教育に携わる一方、ロス・パドレス・ホットショット隊の森林消防士として大規模山火事の最前線で活動した経験を持つ。気候変動、森林火災、環境史、先住民の土地管理などをテーマに研究と執筆を続け、『The New York Times』『Los Angeles Times』『The New York Review of Books』などに寄稿している。代表作『When It All Burns: Fighting Fire in a Transformed World』（未邦訳）は、森林消防士としての実体験を軸に、巨大森林火災（メガファイア）が生まれる歴史的・社会的背景を描いたノンフィクションである。火災の最前線の迫真の記録と、人類と火との関係を問い直す文化人類学的な考察を融合させた作品として高い評価を受け、2025年全米図書賞ノンフィクション部門ファイナリストに選ばれた。
Jordan Thomas is an American anthropologist, climate ethnographer, and nonfiction writer. A Marshall Scholar, he earned graduate degrees from the University of Cambridge and Durham University and is a Chancellor's Fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He also served as a Los Padres Hotshot wildland firefighter, an experience that has profoundly shaped his research and writing on climate change, wildfire, and environmental history. His work has appeared in publications including "The New York Times," "Los Angeles Times," "The New York Review of Books," and "The Drift." His best-known book, "When It All Burns: Fighting Fire in a Transformed World," combines a firsthand account of life on an elite wildfire crew with an anthropological examination of the historical and ecological forces behind the rise of megafires. The book was a finalist for the 2025 National Book Award for Nonfiction and has been widely praised for its blend of immersive reporting, environmental history, and climate analysis.
