ジョナサン・C・スラートは、アメリカの野生生物学者、自然保護活動家。野生生物保全協会（WCS）の温帯アジアプログラム地域ディレクターを務め、ロシア、中国、モンゴル、中央アジアなどで絶滅危惧種の調査・保全活動を統括している。とりわけロシア沿海地方に生息する世界最大級のフクロウ、シマフクロウの生態と保全を専門とする。『極東のシマフクロウ――世界一大きなフクロウを探して』（Owls of the Eastern Ice: A Quest to Find and Save the World's Largest Owl）は、厳冬期の森林や凍結した河川で行った長年の調査をもとに、研究者たちがシマフクロウを捕獲・追跡し、その生息環境を明らかにしていく過程を描いたノンフィクションである。同書は2020年の全米図書賞ノンフィクション部門ロングリストに選ばれ、PEN／E・O・ウィルソン科学文芸賞とミネソタ図書賞を受賞した。
Jonathan C. Slaght is an American wildlife biologist and conservationist. As Regional Director of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Temperate Asia Program, he oversees conservation initiatives in Russia, China, Mongolia, Central Asia, and neighboring regions. His research has focused particularly on the Blakiston’s fish owl, one of the world’s largest and rarest owls, in the forests of the Russian Far East. In "Owls of the Eastern Ice: A Quest to Find and Save the World's Largest Owl," Slaght recounts years of winter fieldwork spent capturing, tracking, and studying the elusive birds while identifying the riverine forests essential to their survival. The book was longlisted for the 2020 National Book Award for Nonfiction and received both the PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award and a Minnesota Book Award.
