John W. Dower（ジョン・W・ダワー、1938年生まれ）は、アメリカの歴史学者。マサチューセッツ工科大学名誉教授。アマースト大学卒業後、ハーバード大学で歴史学博士号（Ph.D.）を取得した。専門は近現代日本史、アジア・太平洋戦争史、日米関係史で、日本の戦争と占領、戦後復興を多角的な視点から研究している。豊富な史料と文化史的アプローチを融合した研究で国際的に高く評価され、1999年刊行の『Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II』は、敗戦直後の日本社会を描いた画期的な研究として、2000年のピューリッツァー賞 一般ノンフィクション部門および全米図書賞を受賞した。著書に『War Without Mercy』『Embracing Defeat』『Cultures of War』『The Violent American Century』などがある。

John W. Dower (born 1938) is an American historian and Professor Emeritus of History at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduating from Amherst College, he earned his Ph.D. in History from Harvard University. His scholarship focuses on modern Japanese history, the Asia-Pacific War, and U.S.–Japan relations, with particular emphasis on war, occupation, and postwar reconstruction. Widely regarded as one of the foremost Western historians of modern Japan, he is known for combining political, cultural, and social history to illuminate the human consequences of war. His landmark work "Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II" won both the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction and the National Book Award for Nonfiction. His other notable books include "War Without Mercy," "Cultures of War," and "The Violent American Century."
