John Leland (born 1959) is an American journalist who has reported for The New York Times after working at publications including Newsweek. His subjects have ranged from music and youth culture to the lives of older people. In “Hip: The History,” he traces jazz, Beat literature, and other cultural movements to examine how ideas of what is “hip” developed in the United States. For “Happiness Is a Choice You Make,” Leland, who was also confronting his mother’s aging, visited six New Yorkers aged 85 or older over the course of a year. He records their daily lives, including illness and loss, and how getting to know them changed his own understanding of aging and happiness.
