John P. Kotter is an American management scholar specializing in organizational change and leadership. Educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, he joined Harvard Business School in 1972 and later became its Konosuke Matsushita Professor of Leadership, Emeritus. His research examined barriers to organizational transformation and the distinct roles of management and leadership. He also co-founded Kotter International to connect this research with organizational practice. In “Leading Change” (1996), he examined why corporate transformations fail and organized the work of change into eight stages. These included establishing urgency, forming a guiding coalition, developing and communicating a vision, generating short-term wins, and anchoring new approaches in organizational culture. The book appeared in Japanese in 1997 as “21 Seiki no Keiei Leadership” and was retitled “Kigyo Henkakuryoku” in 2002. With Vanessa Akhtar and Gaurav Gupta, he wrote “Change: How Organizations Achieve Hard-to-Imagine Results in Uncertain and Volatile Times,” published in Japanese as “CHANGE: Soshiki wa Naze Kawarenai no ka.” It examined the widening gap between accelerating external change and organizations’ capacity to respond, relating this problem to human survival instincts and established organizational structures. Distinguishing responses to threats from the pursuit of opportunities, the authors explored how reliable operating structures can coexist with flexible networks and argued for leadership throughout an organization.
