ジョー・スタッドウェル（Joe Studwell）は、イギリスのジャーナリスト、開発経済研究者。20年以上にわたりアジアで取材活動を行い、中国や東南アジアを中心に、経済発展、産業政策、企業と政治の関係を調査してきた。China Economic Quarterlyの創刊編集者を務め、『エコノミスト』『フィナンシャル・タイムズ』『ウォール・ストリート・ジャーナル』などにも寄稿。ケンブリッジ大学でPh.D.を取得し、Overseas Development Institute（ODI）のSenior Visiting Fellowを務める。代表作『How Asia Works: Success and Failure in the World's Most Dynamic Region』（未邦訳）では、日本、韓国、台湾、中国と東南アジア諸国の発展経路を比較し、農地改革、輸出を重視した製造業育成、金融政策という三つの要素に注目。なぜ一部の東アジア諸国が急速な工業化を実現する一方、他の国々では成長が停滞したのかを、政府の政策と企業行動の違いから分析している。
Joe Studwell is a British journalist and development researcher who has spent more than two decades reporting on and studying Asian economies. His work focuses particularly on economic development, industrial policy, and the relationship between business and political power in China and Southeast Asia. He was the founding editor of the China Economic Quarterly and has contributed to publications including The Economist, the Financial Times, and The Wall Street Journal. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge and is a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Overseas Development Institute (ODI). In "How Asia Works: Success and Failure in the World's Most Dynamic Region," Studwell compares the development paths of Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, and Southeast Asian economies, focusing on three key areas: land reform, export-oriented manufacturing, and finance. He examines how differences in government policy and corporate incentives helped some East Asian economies achieve rapid industrialization while others struggled to sustain comparable growth.
