Joanna Stern (born 1984) is an American technology journalist. After working at Engadget and The Verge, she spent twelve years beginning in 2014 as the personal technology columnist for “The Wall Street Journal,” using articles and videos to explain how smartphones, social media, autonomous vehicles, generative AI, and other technologies affect everyday life. She received a News & Documentary Emmy Award for a documentary examining technology and the digital traces people leave after death. In 2026, she founded the independent media company New Things and became chief technology analyst and a contributing correspondent for NBC News. Her representative work, “I Am Not a Robot: My Year Using AI to Do (Almost) Everything,” records a year-long experiment in which she used more than one hundred AI tools and robots for work, household tasks, health care, travel, creativity, and relationships, testing both their practical benefits and their effects on judgment, privacy, family time, and emotional connection.
