Jim Collins (born 1958) is a management researcher and author whose work examines enduring organizations, leadership, and individual lives. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematical sciences and an MBA at Stanford University and began his research and teaching career at its Graduate School of Business, receiving a Distinguished Teaching Award in 1992. In 1995 he established a management laboratory in Boulder, Colorado, combining research with advice to leaders in business and the social sectors. Built to Last (1994), coauthored with Jerry Porras and translated into Japanese in 1995, compared companies that remained successful across generations of leaders. It examined how preserving core values could coexist with sustained change. Good to Great (2001), based on a five-year comparative study, investigated companies that moved from good performance to sustained exceptional results. Its concepts included leadership combining humility with professional will, selecting people before determining direction, and the flywheel of cumulative effort. What to Make of a Life: Cliffs, Fog, Fire and the Self-Knowledge Imperative (2026) extended his research from organizations to individuals. Drawing on a ten-year project, it paired the lives of musicians, campaigners, athletes, and others at major turning points, following their subsequent choices and divergent paths. It considered self-knowledge, rebuilding after an established role ended, and sustaining creative energy across a lifetime, while also recounting Collins’s own experiences.
