Jill Lepore is an American historian and writer. She is the David Woods Kemper ’41 Professor of American History at Harvard University, a professor at Harvard Law School, and a staff writer at The New Yorker. Her work spans American political and legal history and the history of media and technology, with particular attention to gaps and inequalities in the historical record and their connections to contemporary politics and society. She won the Bancroft Prize for "The Name of War," while "New York Burning" was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. In her landmark one-volume history "These Truths: A History of the United States," Lepore traces the American experiment from the colonial era to the present through the ideals of political equality, natural rights, and popular sovereignty, examining how slavery, racial inequality, women’s suffrage, party politics, and the media have shaped the persistent divide between the nation’s founding principles and its political realities.
