ジル・バーク（Jill Burke）は、イギリスの美術史家、歴史学者。エディンバラ大学教授。イタリア・ルネサンスを専門とし、美術作品だけでなく、身体、美の規範、ジェンダー、化粧や服飾などの物質文化から、当時の人々の生活や社会を研究している。『ルネサンス女性になる方法 絵画の裏に隠されたリアルな美容生活』（原題 How to Be a Renaissance Woman: The Untold History of Beauty and Female Creativity）では、16世紀の美容指南書や化粧品のレシピ、女性たちの手紙や文学作品などをもとに、白い肌や金髪、細い身体といった美の理想がどのようにつくられたのかを検証。化粧や美容を単なる装飾としてではなく、厳しい美の規範や家父長制に直面した女性たちが、知識を共有し、仕事や創作、社会的な地位を得るためにも利用した営みとして描いている。
Jill Burke is a British art historian and historian and Professor of Renaissance Visual and Material Culture at the University of Edinburgh. Specializing in the Italian Renaissance, she studies art alongside the history of the body, beauty ideals, gender, cosmetics, dress, and material culture to explore how people experienced everyday life in the period. In "How to Be a Renaissance Woman: The Untold History of Beauty and Female Creativity," Burke draws on sixteenth-century beauty manuals, cosmetic recipes, letters, and literary works to investigate how ideals such as pale skin, blond hair, and particular body shapes were created and pursued. Rather than treating cosmetics and beauty simply as decoration, the book shows how women living under restrictive beauty standards and patriarchal social structures also used practical knowledge, creativity, and networks of exchange to negotiate their place in Renaissance society.
