Jill Barklem (1951–2017) was a British author and illustrator best known for creating "Brambly Hedge." Drawing on her close observation of the English countryside, plants, and traditional rural life, she began publishing the series in 1980. The stories follow a community of mice living among the roots and trunks of a hedgerow, with adventures shaped by the changing seasons—from spring birthdays and summer weddings to autumn harvests and winter celebrations. Barklem’s intricately detailed illustrations depict the mice’s homes, storerooms, furniture, food, and clothing, creating a miniature world in which families and neighbors work together and organize their lives around the rhythms and resources of the natural world.
