Jennifer Egan (1962–) is an American novelist whose work explores time, memory, technology, and the changing nature of human relationships. She won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award for “A Visit from the Goon Squad,” a formally inventive novel that follows interconnected characters across several generations of the music industry. In “Manhattan Beach,” she turned to historical fiction, portraying a young woman who works at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during World War II and becomes a diver in a male-dominated world. Egan frequently shifts perspective, structure, and even genre from one work to another, using these changes to examine how individuals and societies are reshaped by time, media, and technological change.
