Jeffrey Archer (1940–2026) was a British novelist and former politician. After serving as a Conservative Member of Parliament, he turned to fiction to repay debts incurred through an investment and published his debut, “Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less,” in 1976. The novel follows four victims of an investment fraud who pool their expertise to recover exactly what they lost from the man who cheated them. His best-known novel, “Kane and Abel,” traces the lives of two men born on the same day—a wealthy banker’s son and an impoverished Polish immigrant—whose pursuit of success in America develops into a bitter rivalry. “First Among Equals” follows politicians from contrasting backgrounds competing to become Britain’s prime minister. Through struggles over money, class, and power, Archer depicts how personal ambition and individual choices reshape the lives of families and rivals.
