ジェイン・オースティン（Jane Austen、1775年 - 1817年）は、イギリスの小説家。18世紀末から19世紀初頭のイングランドの地方社会を舞台に、地主階級や中流階級の人々の恋愛、結婚、家族関係を、鋭い人物観察と機知に富んだ会話、皮肉を交えて描いた。女性が財産を相続する機会や自立して収入を得る手段が限られていた時代に、結婚を恋愛だけでなく生活や社会的地位に関わる問題として小説のなかに取り込んだ。代表作『高慢と偏見』（原題 Pride and Prejudice）では、聡明で率直なエリザベス・ベネットと裕福な地主ダーシーが、互いへの第一印象や誤解を乗り越えていく過程を描くとともに、財産、階級、家柄が結婚を左右する当時の社会を、ユーモアと風刺を通して描き出している。
Jane Austen (1775–1817) was an English novelist whose fiction portrays the social world of the landed gentry and middle classes in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century England. Through sharp observation, witty dialogue, and irony, she explored courtship, marriage, family relationships, and the economic pressures facing women in a society where their opportunities to inherit property or achieve financial independence were limited. Her best-known novel, "Pride and Prejudice," follows the intelligent and outspoken Elizabeth Bennet and the wealthy landowner Fitzwilliam Darcy as they overcome mistaken judgments and misunderstandings. Their developing relationship also exposes a society in which property, class, family connections, and financial security strongly shaped the possibilities of marriage.
