Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers(PECASE)を受賞した。
Jamil Zaki is a psychologist studying social connection, including empathy, cooperation, and trust. He studied cognitive neuroscience at Boston University and earned his Ph.D. in psychology at Columbia University in 2010. After postdoctoral research at Harvard University, he joined Stanford University in 2012 and established its Social Neuroscience Laboratory. His research combines behavioural experiments, neuroimaging, and field studies to investigate how people understand others’ emotions, influence one another, and choose to help. In 2019 he received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Alongside his academic research, he writes for newspapers and magazines and gives public talks, exploring empathy as a capacity that can develop through experience and effort. “The War for Kindness: Building Empathy in a Fractured World” (2019), published in Japanese as “Sutanfodo Daigaku no Kyokan no Jugyo,” brought together experiments from his laboratory and reporting on people working to sustain empathy under difficult conditions. Through accounts of people leaving hate groups and healthcare workers confronting burnout, he examined how empathy could be strengthened rather than treated as a fixed trait. “Hope for Cynics: The Surprising Science of Human Goodness” (2024), published in Japanese in 2026 as “Hito o Shinjiru to Iu Sentaku,” turned to distrust and cynical expectations. Drawing on research showing that people underestimate others’ generosity and openness, Zaki examined how expecting selfishness can undermine trust and cooperation. He proposed hopeful skepticism: scrutinizing problems and evidence while remaining attentive to human strengths, distinguishing this approach from both blanket cynicism and uncritical optimism.
