James Oakes (born 1953) is an American historian and professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. His research focuses on slavery, abolitionism, the Civil War, and Abraham Lincoln’s political thought. A two-time recipient of the Lincoln Prize, Oakes examines emancipation not as the result of a single presidential act but as a prolonged political and military process. In “Freedom National: The Destruction of Slavery in the United States, 1861–1865,” he shows how congressional legislation, the advance of Union forces, and the flight and resistance of enslaved people combined to dismantle slavery, recasting the Civil War as a constitutional struggle over federal power and human freedom.
